4 Proposals

Innovation Lab - Haití is a space that seeks to promote social entrepreneurship in civil society organizations and social entrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean, and aims to create projects that promote mitigation and adaptation to climate change in the Caribbean, to be implemented in Haiti.

Its main goal is to provide new ideas and efforts to the historical challenge that Caribbean cities and communities face. It particularly seeks to generate comprehensive solutions for risk management, mitigating the impact of natural disasters and strengthening the social network, considering that Haiti is one of the most vulnerable countries in the face of Climate Change.

The lab will be carried out in a virtual format due to the COVID-19 context, which will also allow the application of projects from all the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The projects may either be focused on digital development or work in the territory, with the support of local organizations for their implementation.

- Location: The projects will be focused on  Haitian communities. The organizers will facilitate contact for their implementation in the communities of Tè Nwa and Trou Gilot. However, the qualifying teams will be allowed to present other communities in the Haitian territory that could be impacted. In these cases, teams must send the exact location of the community and the request will be evaluated. In order to do this, the team must demonstrate experience, previous work or contact with these communities.

- Project type: Proposals for rapid execution projects that have at least one validated and viable product will be received. During the different stages of the Laboratory, these proposals should be developed and adapted to the context and realities of Haiti.

The submitted projects may be digital developments, infrastructure projects and / or some other innovation that can benefit these communities in the face of climate change challenges and strengthen their resilience. The prototypes will be developed during the Workshop and Innovation Laboratory stages. Subsequently, the winning teams will have funds for their implementation, and a 45 days period for their execution.

In the case of projects that require a face-to-face intervention for their implementation and the team does not have a presence in Haiti, it will be accompanied by TECHO Haiti in conjunction with local organizations identified for each of the challenges presented in this Laboratory.

The Laboratory seeks the generation of solutions focused on climate change and resilience in any of its aspects that may represent a significant change in communities’ quality of life. However, the laboratory aims to address some specific challenges, which are:

  1. - Water and sanitation solutions
  2. - Agriculture and efficient irrigation systems
  3. - Resilience and disaster response
  4. - Institutional strengthening of Civil Society Organizations
  5. - Other

- Being an entrepreneurship, social enterprise or civil society organization with a solution that can generate a positive impact through the development of projects in communities, to mitigate the effects of climate change in Haiti.

- Having a team made up of 3 to 5 members. Members with experience in developing solutions to mitigate climate change and / or strengthen local resilience will be valued.

- Team members must be over 18 and under 40 (as of November 6, 2020), and  reside in a Latin American or Caribbean country.

- Having a solution that has at least one validated viable product, which will later be adapted to the context and reality of Haiti.

- Having the availability, disposition and commitment to actively participate in all the activities of this program. In addition, the winning teams must commit to carrying out the implementation of the project prototype in a period of 30 to 45 calendar days.

Winning teams will carry out the implementation of the prototype developed during the Laboratory through joint coordination with TECHO Haiti and local organizations. They will have funds available for its execution, which will be transferred to the executing organizations selected by the organizers for each challenge:

- 1st. place: USD$1,500

- 2nd. place: USD$1,250

- 3rd. place: USD$1,000

The laboratory organizers will further manage spaces for training, knowledge diffusion and technical assistance for winning teams. These opportunities are aimed at strengthening the solutions presented once  implemented. These spaces will have a special focus on team management and development, funds development and finances, as well as the deepening of the business model in order to seek impact sustainability and scalability for their initiative.

Finally, 5 selected projects will have visibility in the Innovation Gallery of the global Innovation for Change (I4C) network with international scope.
