The Butterfly House Project

Created by Rogelio "Vonz" Santos. The Butterfly House is a steel-framed housing structure that can be folded for compact shipping and storage, and unfolded into an immediately livable structure. It is called The Butterfly House because it unfolds like a butterfly and is quick to deploy to its target areas.

The Advantages
------------------------------
The advantages of the Butterfly House are numerous especially when compared to current disaster response shelter solutions.

1. Stronger. It is a steel frame structure providing more strength and durability than wooden shelters or tents.

2. Faster to Deploy and Erect. The Butterfly House is designed to fit multiple housing units when folded into a single freight container for transfer via ship or truck. Since the house is basically “unfolded” rather than constructed on site, the speed of deploying housing to thousands is accelerated while reducing the man-hours required for on-site construction.
3. Consistent. Because the Butterfly House is constructed in a factory assembly process, there is no longer an issue of various contractors developing under specifications or with sub-standard materials.
4. Scalable. Under a centralized assembly process, housing or relief organizations no longer need to rely on a large labor force that is on site or a large volunteer force some organizations use to offset construction costs which can be slow and tedious. This removes millions of man-hours of labor needed to construct emergency shelter solutions. It is more practical to increase production capacity and maintain product integrity centrally than with a decentralized effort which increases the demand of skilled oversight. Its ability to scale is the most important aspect of the Butterfly Housing System. The fact that it can more practically scale to meet the overwhelming demand of homes needed and in a shorter period of time than most other solutions.
5. Re-usable. As an immediate response, temporary housing solution to meet the needs of displaced families after a calamity, the Butterfly House is ideal since it is re-usable. With so many typhoons and earthquakes that take place in the Philippines, investing in bunkhouse solutions as a temporary shelter system requires local government units (LGUs) to donate their land for these permanent structures. With the Butterfly House System, these units require softer commitments.
6. Permanent Home. The Butterfly House has the unique ability of transition into a permanent home use. The steel frame provides a sturdy structure when compared to wood based frame solutions traditionally used in lower cost housing.
7. Cheaper. As low-cost housing solution, the Butterfly House is priced below the current solutions and is still comparable in terms of size and durability. It’s added feature of being a portable, re-usable system also increases its overall lifetime value as it can be implemented over and over again to meet immediate disaster response needs.

Great idea! A few questions: What is the cost of installing tents? And what is the cost of this new idea? It would be interesting to have the comparison. Furthermore, how are the times of manufacture? The idea is to have stock available to use in case of disaster or it can be manufactured in a short time? Did you consider the logistics to bring these homes to areas of catastrophe, considering that the roads are collapsing? Thank you!
